Soon after, we cross over the Ghatta Khola past the water operated mill and through a suspension bridge to reach to the Gurung village of Philim. Philim has the MCAP head office, micro hydropower plant, school supported by Japanese nationals and a health post. The trail turns north above the village and soon passes the village of Ekle Bhatti. We continue on past a narrow gorge, beautiful waterfall, occasional glimpses of wildlife and the smaller settlements to the opposite side of the gorge. After around two hours, we depart from the main trail and proceed further north after crossing a river. Shyala village provides the view of Himal chuli, Peak 29, glaciers and other treks including the Ganesh Himal seen far away. Ahead lies our destination for today, the Samagaun.

Hiking time: 5.5 hours

MAY 6 (Day 15) Acclimatization day in Samagaun

This day is set aside for acclimatization. You will explore the surroundings of the village and hike through the grazing wall towards the Manaslu Base Camp and Birendra Lake. Dense forests, rhododendron and juniper trees welcome us as we move further up to be welcomed by the lake and icefall of Manaslu Glacier. Samagaun is a lovely village that has houses aligned in a row. I't’s the closest village to Manaslu Base Camp. We also visit the ancient Pungyen gompa that provides an extraordinary view of the glacier. There are several folklores that narrate the faith of the locals towards the gompa. We also explore the nearby Sherpa village and have an insider’s view into the local culture and lifestyle.

On the way comes the Kermo Kharka and from there we continue by crossing the Budhi Gandaki river. We ascend towards the stone arc where below we find a large white Kani. Finally, we reach the destination of Samdo. Samdo has two hiking options; one hike heads to the back of the Samdo village and the other towards the Gya La pass.

Hiking time: 3 hours

MAY 8 (Day 17) Samdo to Dharmashala (14,632 feet / 4,460 meters)

The mighty Budhi Gandaki river is again our companion of today where we walk down the edge and cross the river moving up the trail. We reach the stone guest house in Larke Phedi or Dharmashala after crossing a couple of streams and witnessing the Larke glacier and the valley of Salka Khola. Today, we do a short walk which leaves us plenty of time for acclimatization. This further enhances our ability to adapt to the altitude and prepare us for the next day’s hike up towards Larke pass.

Hiking time: 3 hours

MAY 9 (Day 18) Dharmashala to Bhimtang (16,929 feet / 5,160 meters)

This is one of the most interesting and challenging days as we climb up to the Larke La Pass. We do an early start as this is a long day. The hike up takes us to the north side of the pass to witness the Larke Peak. You may find blue sheep, marmot, pika and Tibetan snow-cock tracks and snow leopard paw prints if you are lucky. Across the accumulated earth and stones deposited by the glacier, our slow ascent will take us further to the steep and last section of the pass. Today, on the rocky terrain along the river bed we contour along the sliding hillsides as we descend and reach the village of Tilije. Tilije has the diverse coexistence of Ghale Gurung, Manangis and Chhetri community. This has also created a blend of cultural and architectural elements. Walking down the Dudh Koshi river and Marsyandhi valley, you will cross a suspension bridge and climb a chorten shaped arch before reaching Thoche (Thonje) village. After Thonje village, we will reach Dharapani where our trek ends. (Dharapani is the starting point of the Annpurna Trek)

MAY 12 (Day 21) Dharapani to Chame

Today is wonderful, with plenty of opportunities to soak in hot springs and stroll through mountain villages and forests. The first spring is at Lata Manang where you can also cross the Marsyangdi if the river is low enough. We then head on to Chame where there are yet more hot springs to enjoy!

Hiking time: 6 hours / Highest elevation: 2670 meters

Hiking time: 3 hours / Highest elevation: 3540 meters

MAY 15 (Day 24) Acclimatization in Manang

MAY 16 (Day 25) Manang to Tilicho Base Camp

As we trek towards the pine forest, the path leads us towards Khangsar river. After crossing the river, we will pass Khangsar village and Sri Kharka. A beautiful glimpse of Tilicho peak can be seen from these two settlements. After passing Sri Kharka, we will reach Tilicho Base Camp.

Hiking time: 7 hours / Highest elevation: 4150 meters

MAY 17 (Day 26) Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho lake & back

The trail gives us a mesmerizing view of Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syagang, Thorung Peak, and Mt. Khatungkan. We will continue on to Thorung High Camp from Thorung Phedi.

Hiking time: 5 hours / Highest elevation: 4833

MAY 20 (Day 29) Thorung High Camp to Thorung La Pass to Muktinath

Today is the hardest day on the trek. We first ascend steeply to 4590 meters and then trek along an undulating trail to the flat top of Thorung La Pass (5416 meters). From here, there are stunning views of the Annapurna range to the south and Mukut Himal bordering Dolpo to the West. The trail descends steeply over glacial moraine, which gives way to grassy meadows before we reach Muktinath. This is one of the most important pilgrimage sights for Hindus and is home to many ethnic Tibetans and Buddhist monks who live in monasteries scattered around the valley. The nearby temple with 108 carved spouts from which holy water flows is famous for a fire that miraculously burns in a stream of water.
